Overestimation of left ventricular volume by the indicator dilution technique.

چکیده
• Since the work of Bing and co-workers and the subsequent observations of Holt, the indicator dilution technique has been used to measure ventricular volume. The validity of the technique depends upon thorough mixing of indicator with ventricular blood. However, experimental data have been presented by Irisawa et al. and subsequently by Swan and Beck suggesting that requisite mixing does not occur promptly or reliably in the left ventricle. Moreover, Hallermann et al., comparing volume estimates made sequentially by angiocardiography and by indicator dilution, have shown a systematic overestimation of volume by the indicator dilution technique, and have suggested that the cause was incomplete mixing of indicator with ventricular blood. Despite these reports of incomplete mixing, several experimental studies have been reported which rely upon left ventricular volume measurements performed by indicator dilution."

Measurement of stroke volume by the vibrocardiogram.
An examination has been made of the relationship between stroke volume measured by dye dilution and left ventricular isovolumetric contraction and ejection times as measured by the vibrocardiogram. These studies were performed in 10 normal subjects under postural alterations, and in 11 patients recovering from acute myocardial infarction. gression analyses of the data showed that ejection t h e...

was demonstrated by both methods in 10. However, in one case, the indicator curve showed a left-to-right shunt whereas selective left ventricular cineangiography failed to demonstrate it. Conversely, in two other cases, selective left ventricular cineangiography demonstrated a small ventricular septal defect while a normal culve was obtained by indicator-dilution technique. Comparing our experi...
متن کاملEstimation of the residual volume of the ventricle of the dog's heart by two indicator dilution technics.
A dye dilution and an electric conductivity method for measuring end-diastolic volume and stroke volume of the left ventricle are described, and equations for the calculation of stroke volume are given. When dye is injected "instantaneously" into the left ventricle during diastole, the aortic dye concentration-time curve obtained is a step-like curve and not a smooth curve. The ventricle emptie...
متن کاملThe use of invasive techniques, angiography and indicator dilution, for quantification of valvular regurgitations.
Angiographic techniques have been used for the quantification of mitral or aortic and rarely tricuspid regurgitation. Mitral or aortic regurgitant volume per beat and the regurgitation fraction (fao and fm, respectively) are obtained from the angiographic determination of total left ventricular stroke volume (TSV) and forward stroke volume (FSV) estimated by a different technique. Although this...
متن کاملLeft Ventricular Volume Measurements in Man by Thermodilution.
A safe, rapid method for estimating left ventricular volume in man during the course of hemodynamic studies should prove helpful in the assessment of cardiac disease and useful in physiological research. It is the purpose of this report to present left ventricular volume measurements in man that were obtained by an indicator dilution method which employs cold as the indicator. This circulatory ...
